Where Haverhill Files Probate Records
Haverhill residents have two court locations for probate filings. Most people use the Lawrence Probate and Family Court because it is closer. The MBTA Haverhill Line connects Haverhill to Lawrence by commuter rail. Lawrence Station is about half a mile from the courthouse. This makes the Lawrence court the most practical option for Haverhill residents who do not drive. Parking in Lawrence is available at two paid lots near the courthouse and a paid garage next to the building. Metered street parking is also around. Keep in mind that the Lawrence registry closes from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM every day for a break. Plan to arrive before 1:00 PM or after 2:00 PM if you need counter service.
You can also skip the trip entirely and file through eFileMA. The system handles many types of probate filings online. There is a one-time $22.00 provider fee for new cases. After that, additional filings in the same case have no extra eFiling fee.
How to Search Haverhill Probate Records
Search Haverhill probate court records online at MassCourts. Choose "Probate & Family Court" and "Essex" as the division. Then search by name or case number. The system covers cases from 2000 onward and shows party names, case type, filing dates, docket entries, and hearing dates. Document images are available for many cases filed after 2009. Older cases show basic docket info but you will need to request actual documents in person or by mail.
Haverhill cases use the Essex docket format. Each number starts with ES, then the year, a letter for the case group, a sequence number, and a type code. For instance, ES20P0321EA is a 2020 Essex probate case. The Trial Court docket guide breaks down the format and shows you how to get the best results from name and number searches.
The Trial Court website also has a helpful page on how to get copies of probate court records. It covers what forms to use, what fees to pay, and how to submit requests by mail or in person.
The Essex County virtual registry is another option. It runs on Zoom during court hours. You enter a virtual waiting room and speak with registry staff face to face. They can check on a case, answer questions, or help with forms. This is useful for Haverhill residents who want help without driving to Lawrence or Salem.
Probate Filings and Fees in Haverhill
Haverhill residents follow the Massachusetts Uniform Probate Code (M.G.L. c. 190B) for all probate matters. The code sets out two main ways to probate a will. Voluntary administration for small estates under $25,000 costs $115.
Guardianship and conservatorship have their own fee structure. A guardianship of a minor is free to file. Guardianship of an incapacitated person costs $255 total under M.G.L. c. 190B, section 5-103. Conservatorship also costs $255. Estate accounting fees scale with the value of the estate, from $0 for estates under $25,000 up to $3,500 for estates over $10 million. The full fee schedule is on the Trial Court website.
Record copy fees at the Essex County court are set by the state. Plain copies cost $1.00 per page. Attested copies are $2.50 per page. Certified copies of guardian decrees cost $22.00 each. Letters of authority cost $25.00. Use the PFC 18 form for mail requests. Send it to either the Lawrence or Salem address with payment by money order or bank check made out to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Legal Help for Haverhill Residents

In-person help in Salem is offered Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings and Wednesday afternoons. Check the schedule on mass.gov for details. This is a good option for Haverhill residents who have questions about a probate case but cannot afford an attorney.
All probate forms are free at mass.gov. The Massachusetts Bar Association lawyer referral service at (617) 654-0400 can match you with an estate attorney. The first meeting costs $25 for half an hour. The Trial Court help line at 1-833-91-COURT answers general questions about court procedures during business hours.
